Protecting Space by Learning From Nature: The Vision of Haumea Tech

Haumea Tech is developing one of the most innovative Italian inventions of the decade: a bio-inspired material engineered to absorb hypersonic impacts and capture micro-debris in low Earth orbit. Inspired by the mechanics of a spiderweb, this next-generation “intelligent shield” aims to protect satellites and infrastructures in an increasingly crowded orbital environment.

With tens of thousands of new satellites expected in the coming years, micro-debris has become one of the most urgent threats to the space economy. Haumea Tech’s material introduces a new approach: instead of merely resisting collisions, it traps debris and dissipates energy across the entire structure.

Designed for space but adaptable to multiple terrestrial applications—from defense to advanced industrial protection—the technology is scalable, modular and engineered at chemical, nano-structural and geometric levels.

Haumea Tech is now moving toward laboratory development, engineering phases, and the first in-orbit demonstration mission.
